Top 10 African Car Manufacturers

The demand for automobiles in Africa is very high and millions of cars are imported into the continent on a monthly basis yet the improvement of our indigenous car manufacturing companies hasn’t been so rapid compared to the demand of cars on the continent.

However, a few indigenous companies are making a lot of effort to try to take over the African market and make automobile vehicles more affordable. Here are a list of the top 10 African car manufacturing companies in Africa.

10. Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (Nigeria)

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM) was commissioned by His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan at Nnewi. IVM is part of the Innoson Group of Companies founded by the visionary Chairman, Mr. Innocent Chukwuma, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

The company also provides good services for repairs and parts supply. All these actions are engineered to meet the customers’ special requests, attain the highest possible performance and safety standards and also make the vehicles suitable for the west African market.

9. Kantanka Automobile Company (Ghana)

The Ghanaian based automobile company founded by Apostle Safo Kantanka, assembles its passenger vehicles (mainly SUVs and pickup trucks) at the company’s manufacturing plant located in Gomoa Mpota in the central region of Ghana. The Kantanka range of cars includes both saloon and four wheel drives.

 

 

 

 

8. Wallyscar (Tunisia)
Wallyscar is a Tunisian car manufacturer, founded in 2007 and based in La Marsa. Production is 600 units per year. The company sells in Panama, France, Spain, Qatar and Morocco.Wallyscar cooperates with the French automobile company Peugeot, using a PSA 1.4 litre petrol engine in their vehicles. 7. Optimal Energy Joule (South-Africa)
Joule was an electric five seat passenger car by Optimal Energy, a South African company based in Cape Town. According to the company, it was to have a nominal driving range of 150 km and a top speed of 135 km/h. Designed to achieve a Euro NCAP 4 star safety rating, it complied with the stringent EU standards. It was never released commercially; production ceased in April 2012, and in June 2012 Optimal Energy announced its intention to close down

 

 

 

6.Kiira Motors (Uganda)

Uganda isn’t known for its Hybrid cars but this company, Kiira Motors is changing that real fast as it has introduced Uganda’s first Hybrid cars as it showcased it at a fair in Nairobi in 2014. The company is set to go into full scale production of the Hybrid cars in 2018 and is presently sourcing for investment.

 

 

 

5. Advanced Automotive Design (AAD) (South-Africa)
Advanced Automotive Design (AAD) is a South African automobile manufacturer located in Die Wilgers, Pretoria. The company was founded in 1995 by Brian Glover and Rhys Edwards. Shaka is a registered Trademark of the AAD.
In 1997 they showed their first vehicle called Shaka Nynya on the South Florida International Auto Show.

 

 

 

 

4. Saroukh el-Jamahiriya (Libya)
The Saroukh el-Jamahiriya (Libyan rocket) is a 5-passenger saloon in a metallic Libyan revolutionary green with tinted windows. This sleek James Bond-style car was unveiled in 1999. Dukhali Al-Meghareff, chairman of the Libyan Arab Domestic Investment Company which produced the prototype, billed it as a revolutionary in automotive industry.

 

 

 

 

3. Birkin Cars (PTY) (South-Africa)
BIRKIN CARS (PTY) LTD has sold a portion of its South African manufacturing business to a company owned by Ralph Smith and Dean Knoop. The company trading as BIRKIN PERFORMANCE CARS has acquired the exclusive rights to manufacture the current Birkin product range (S3, CS3, S3XS and CS3XS) and all preceding models under licence to BIRKIN

The Perana Performance Group is a South African car developer located in Port Elizabeth. It is the second manufacturer which uses the Perana brand name after the famous Basil Green Motors. 1. Laraki Motors (Morocco)
The Perana Performance Group is a South African car developer located in Port Elizabeth. It is the second manufacturer which uses the Perana brand name after the famous Basil Green Motors. The company was founded in the late 2007. The cars are manufactured in the Hi-Tech plant of Hi-Tech Automotive & Superformance.
By 2012 Superformance partnered with AC Cars and the Perana was renamed the AC 378 GT Zagato.
